Mercan Dede is deeply influenced by the Sufi tradition. In fact his live shows include Sufi dancers and whirling dervishes, and he plays the quintessential Sufi instrument, the ney (reed flute). What sets him apart is his use of percussion and various forms of electronica to transform traditional acoustic sounds into electronic dance. He speaks of himself as "a dervish for the modern world."

Aynur Dogan learned to sing from her family singing traditional folk songs in Kurdish. She arranges her work in both Kurdish and Turkish with different musical instruments from around the world. She performs Kurdish folk songs with a world music twist. Not many in the young Turkish audience understand Kurdish, but language doesn't seem to be a barrier.

Erkan Ogur is the first Turkish musician who invented the first fretless classical guitar. He is a master oud player and has scored many movie sound tracks. Erkan’s soothing voice is the perfect complement to his musical instruments.

Orhan Gencebay is one of the greatest stars in Turkey. He is the Elvis of Arabesque music, the hero of cab drivers, the popular icon. He has sold millions of albums since the 1960s and was a popular screen actor when the Turkish film industry was still flourishing. His instrument is the long-necked lute called saz.

Sezen Akzu is called the "voice of Istanbul." Her voice resonates among people of all social levels and ages. Even in far away Germany many a lovesick emigrant child has cried herself to sleep listening to Sezen's songs. Since the beginning of her career in the 1970s she has been venerated like a goddess, and she is well known far beyond the Turkish border. She has sung and composed many songs about Istanbul. In "Istanbul Hatirasi" (Memories of Istanbul) she sings about an old Istanbul she never experienced herself.

CEZA ("the punishment"), Turkey´s answer to the U.S. rap band Public Enemy, is a very serious young man, who has no use for the poses and fake attitudes of American "gangsta rappers." Using the entertainment value of hip-hop, he aims to get across his social and political views, based on his life and psychological state of mind.
